Thermal imaging supports the work of podiatrists – practical experiences in the treatment of diabetics

This is a summary of an interview published in issue 1/2026 of Podoprintti magazine.

Podiatrist Pia Kallio has been using thermal imaging in her work for four years, and the method has become an important tool in examining the feet of diabetics. Thermal images quickly reveal temperature differences, offload imbalances, and muscle imbalances – things that are not always apparent with traditional examination methods.

According to Kallio, thermal imaging has helped to identify pressure changes caused by unsuitable footwear, for example, and to locate the causes of chronic pain. In two recent customer cases, thermography guided the selection of the right footwear and revealed muscle dysfunctions, the treatment of which eliminated the customers’ symptoms.

“Thermal imaging has provided me with a method that allows me to obtain crucial information about my clients. This is particularly useful when a client’s senses, such as touch, perception of movement, or cognitive skills, are limited,” Kallio explains.

Thermal imaging provides podiatrists with a clear, visual tool that supports preventive care, particularly for diabetic patients.
